Our 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has been one of the best (and most FUN!) vehicles we have ever owned!
While this brief overview about the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited covers most of the basic points, what follows is an overly-detailed review of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited -- from my own firsthand experience.
PROS...
Call me corny, but I like the comfort and fit of the seatbelts. Jim has made the same comment already. They rest lower on your hips and stay in place softly across your chest -- without BINDING you into place. Plus, they're adjustable near the door frame, so you can position them for a taller person or a shorter person.
I LOVE the rearview mirror. It's got what we've longed for: a compass/temperature display. Jim's Ford Explorer used to have that, and with all the road trips we take, it really comes in handy. In fact, we like to TRY to get lost on backroads just so we can try to find our way back to civilization -- and the compass really comes in handy for that.
My favorite #1 feature in this Jeep is the soundbar & 7-speaker system. I've never owned a vehicle where you could BLAST the stereo without the speakers cracking or muffling the sound quality. Already, I've been jammin... and I can't top out these speakers! There are two above your head (since this is a convertible, they're in a really cool "soundbar" attached to the roll bar), plus two up front built into the dash, and... two "butt speakers" built into the center console, right by your hips. So when you're really rockin out, you're REALLY rockin out! (I haven't found the 7th speaker yet... Jim???)
There are NO blind spots. Not only is the rearview mirror great because of its compass/thermometer/auto dimmer features, but it's also really modern and gives you a view of the entire rear of the vehicle -- including most of the sides! And the side mirrors on the doors do the same thing -- they also give you a different perspective than I'm used to. Plus, when the softop is on, the windows are placed practically along the entire sides, giving you a perfect close-up view of what's right next to you.
There's LOTS of head room. Jim and I are both very tall. In his '90 Wrangler, our head is fairly close to the ceiling... or so it seemed. In the Unlimited, we're nowhere near! There is LOTS of room inside the cabin of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, making the ride itself more enjoyable, because you don't feel "confined" or "swished in".
The windows are tinted all around you -- both the glass (windshield & full doors), and the softop (vinyl windows on the sides and rear). They're not that really dark, heavy tint, but they certainly appear darker from the outside than they do from the inside. Plus, they help to deter thieves, as you can't really see what's inside (when the full top is on) unless you open the door.
The cargo space is amazing. Our first weekend of ownership, we packed up the Jeep and took it on a camping trip. Inside, we loaded it with camping gear for 4 adults, 1 child and 1 dog! It was tight, but that's a lot of gear! We were amazed how much we could fit inside this Jeep Wrangler, including 3 tents, 1 cooler, 6 chairs, and a TON more.
The upgraded leather steering wheel is really soft and durable. I've always got a great grip of the wheel, and it feels good. It feels "rich".
The front seats pop up and out of the way which makes getting in and out of the back seats pretty easy. Combined with the attached sidestep at each door, it's a simple step up-and-in for the rear passengers.
I've saved the best for last... It's a given that I LOVE the top-down feel and the wind blowing through my hair. But the Unlimited models have an EXTRA feature: The Sunrider soft top includes a "sunroof" feature in addition to the full top-down ability. So, by folding the soft top back over the driver and front passenger, you create a 45x23-inch sunroof opening that is larger than the typical glass sunroof.
Fellow Jeep owners will enjoy our step-by-step video showing how to open the Sunrider top, and how to put the entire soft top down altogether.
What took us an hour-and-a-half the very first time, now takes 10 minutes tops!
Check out the video here.
CONS...
Not only are things like "eating while driving" and "talking on a cellphone" driver distractions... I'd have to say that so is HAIR IN THE EYES! I need to figure out a better "do" for all this Jeepin I'm about to do... As a passenger in Jim's Jeep, I could deal with it on occasion. But as the daily driver in my own Jeep, I need to have a better plan of attack, before I get fired for looking like I walked in straight from the beach each day!
Check out these convertible-proof hair products!
There's no "scan" on the radio! Can you believe it?!... In this day & age, for a vehicle to NOT have my favorite radio station??? Ah well, at least there's a built-in CD player.
Gas mileage (eighteen mpg). Hey, it's an SUV for one, and a Jeep for two. Neither has a great reputation as far as gas mileage is concerned. I'm just going to have to make a conscious effort to start "drafting" behind bigger vehicles now...
On a related note, the gas pedal itself is VERY touchy, so even a slight depression propels the Jeep forward (...and consumes about 2 cups of fuel at the same time!) I have to remember to use a lighter touch on the gas pedal, that's all. Or use the cruise control more. We've actually noticed a difference in gas mileage between a trip where we primarily used the cruise control, and one where we didn't.
The side mirrors are a tad bumpy while driving. Then again, Jim likes that the ride is a little bouncy...
This is trivial and doesn't even bother me yet, but on long drives it might: No arm rests on the doors. But trust me, this one BARELY made it onto the "con" list. Instead of an armrest with a flat ledge, there's a thick plastic grip that you use to pull the door shut. No biggie.
It takes a hefty step up to get yourself into this Jeep. I'm tall and it's still a conscious effort for me to maneuver my way inside.
There's no anti-lock braking system (ABS) available on Unlimiteds, which means that stopping on wet pavement could prove to be a bit tricky at times.
The floorboards up front tend to collect a lot of heat. If you ride around barefoot alot (like me), then you'll notice the heat a lot more than when you're wearing shoes.
The full metal doors aren't "easily" removable. They're bolted on in some fancier way than the doors on our '90 YJ were, making them a pain to take off.
No one told us the proper way to roll up the back window, so take it from us on this one: remove every visible particle of dirt BEFORE you roll it up to feel the breeze through the back window. We didn't, and we drove 3 or 4 days that way, not realizing that even the most minute particles of dirt and grit scratch the heck out of that vinyl! It's permanent, too.
Lots more great tips for Jeep windows here.
It Just Is...
The ride is a tad bumpier than most new cars... but that's because it's a Jeep! Jeeps have a different suspension (Jim, feel free to pipe in here anytime...) that accommodates for the rougher terrain off-road, but also makes you "feel" the ride more on the highway. This isn't REALLY noticeable. Okay, maybe it is. But it isn't really unbearable. No way. I liken it to a roller coaster ride... where you feel the bumps differently in the front cars than you do the back cars. I sense that the Jeep's suspension is similar, and that's what I'm feeling. However, over bumps and holes themselves, the ride is remarkably smooth! Just like any other new car. In fact, the suspension is so much better on this Jeep than it was on my '99 Grand Cherokee that the bumps are less noticeable now.
Good thing we don't smoke (ahem... Jim!), cuz there isn't an ASHTRAY in this thing! That's a first. There's a SPOT for an ashtray, but it's covered with that thick plastic dashboard molding instead. And there are two (2) cigarette lighters on the front console. Wait, I take that back... there are two (2) cigarette POWER ADAPTER slots on the front console --- for all your mobile electronic gadgetry. There's not a "lighter" with heating coils anywhere to be found.
The full metal doors (with glass windows) are SO incredibly light that the doors swing full open and fast. Thus, if you are parked close to someone, you're likely to send your door directly into their parked car. Yes, there's a "strap" or a "guard" that only lets the door open so far, but it allows for a very wide area, so you just need to be careful when you're getting in and out of the doors. On the plus side, the doors aren't nearly as heavy and clunky as those in our '90 Jeep Wrangler. You almost have to slam those twice just to get them to close. (Though they do prop themselves open quite nicely -- I think it's the years of rust & grime that's built into the grooves now.)
Although it's a 6-cylinder, I can't help but think that it doesn't have the greatest pick up. Jim hates when I say that though... cuz he says it's just GEARED differently, and it's not built to be a speedy car with fast pick up. Instead, it's more like you arrive at your intended gear much more gradually... and powerfully. (Our last Wrangler was a 4-cylinder, and trust me, it's MUCH quicker and more powerful than that one was!)
You can't take it through normal car washes (if you have a soft top, that is). Instead, you have to hand wash it. I guess some might take their Wrangler through a brushless car wash, but we wouldn't. Mostly because of the waxes and chemicals that they use. (Here's how we take extra steps to prolong the life of our Jeep soft top and vinyl windows.)
Summary
So, that's about it...
The real deal about Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds. For the most part, it's ALL positive. Some of those things on the "con" side were pretty nit-picky... just to have something to put on the list.
Every day, Jim tells me: "I think that this is one of the BEST purchases we've ever made!" And I have to agree. It's comfortable. It's practical. And, it's FUN!
Check out all our favorite Jeep stuff!
UPDATE 12/4/05:
We learned from experience (and from others who said they heard a "popcorn popping" kind of sound sometimes with their soft top attached) that you will hear strange sounds IF the brace that has an upside down "U" shape piece (on both sides over the door areas-- where the release clips are) is not perfectly placed over the railing that it's intended to rest on (when putting the soft top back on). The "U" shape is such that it fits perfectly on the bar -- but if you're in a hurry and don't check its placement, it could end up not even ON the bar that it's supposed to rest on. So, if you're ever hearing a strange popping noise when your soft top is in place, that may be the cause...

Do I need to have a soft or hard top??
Can i just take it all off? or will the rain destroy the interior?
I have an Unlimited X as well and my roof was leaking for a while, but i took it to the shop and it was a recall so they fixed it. You should get it checked out
I purchased a 2007 Jeep Wrangler X in July of 2007. I was SO excited because i've always wanted one. Well, i'm VERY disappointed in Jeep now. First, it was the seats. They don't pop up like they used to. It's IMPOSSIBLE for people to get in the back, especially adults. Forget about it. I have 2 kids, I just have them climb over. The seats suck. Then, I needed a new air filter, normally they cost maybe $20, not for these cars. Chrylser hasn't released the patent or whatever for the parts for these new Wranglers, the air filter cost $60. Then, just yesterday, I had to have the brakes done. Normally, the cost $199. Not for this car. It's $400, because once again, Chrysler hasn't released the patent for the parts. I'm furious! I hate this car, it's costing a fortune just for normal maintenance. And, if you have to replace your headlight bulb, HA! Good Luck! It's impossible to get to. You have to take the front apart, use a special screw driver. It's insane. I don't reccomend these new Jeeps at all. I wish I could get rid of mine.
I'm just VERY disappointed in something i've wanted forever!
Jeep Wrangler has been my favourite car for ages but never took the plunge, I was curious to its safety on the roads. Ive heard that some 4WDs tend to topel over easier than others. Can you clear this worry up for me. Aussie Gal that wants the top OFF!!!!
Hey this helped me alot and it was very entertaining to read. I'm only 17 but I purchased my first Jeep already.(notice how I said first, Im hoping to get a Jeep cherokee when i get older.)
I have a Red Jeep Wrangler 98' and love it. I havent named it yet but I know its a girl.
yes, it has a 4-cylinder engine so the acceleration is not good at all, but once its got its speed it's fine. Also, the fuel economy is a bit better, I think im getting 15 city, 21 highway. It's just the sacrifice I make for my jeep :]. The only problem that I find common among jeeps is the gauges seem to get screw-y sometimes. I definitely need to fix my fuel gauge that's for sure. thanks again for posting this up. Enjoy your jeep :]
Welcome to the Jeep family Mario. You can wish for your Cherokee, but if your like me the Wrangler will be your first and best love.
See you on the trail
I too own an 05 Unlimited and I love it.
I did find all 7 speakers. 2 in the sound bar, 1 woffer in the center con. and 4 in the front dash.
I, 2, own a Wrangler Unlimited, but my baby is 4 door! Love it almost as much as my wife? No place to put extra electronics though. Does your roof leak? My Mastiff and Pug love it 2! Headed north soon from Joliet, Il for camping pulling a teardrop/ATV trailer!
Hoping someone could give me some advice. I've never owned or driven a Jeep Wrangler. However, I've been asked to drive a 2000 Jeep Wrangler softop from LA to Maine and was wondering if this is a good idea and what can I expect.
Any comments, suggestions or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi,
Your site(video) saved my day. I bought my first JEEP about a month ago, a 2006 Unlimited, with 11K miles. I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase the Chrysler Warranty as a result of the low mileage. All I have to pay for is gas and insurance, albeit I cannot make any changes or risk voiding the warranty. But who needs changes, its perfect as is. I do have one question though, your 12/04/05 update you posted some information about the U shape piece. I took the top down the other night with relative ease but when I tried to have the U piece sit on the bar, I had a hard time zipping the windows and it seems that the top was not resting on the speaker bar, it was about an inch or so high. So I moved the U piece inside of the bar and was able to zip the side windows in with no problems. I also have not noticed the "popcorn popping" sound you mentioned when I did this. Am I doing something wrong? Thank You. Burke in DC.
You mentioned you rolled up your rear window. I just recently bought a 2004 unlimited and it still is pretty cool here in VA so I haven't messed with the windows much. But i have not seen anywhere to secure the window rolled up.
Also on my 04 not sure what you are talking about with the doors. I have been able to just remove the strap and the doors just pull up and out, but then again I may be missing something.
I bought it used and it didn't come with the factory straps, are these something I can order or do you happen to know where to get some.
other than that I love it!
thanks for the site... great info!
Chris
Hi Scott -
I checked with Jim (who does most of the washing of our Jeep). He said yes, he regularly uses the Raggtop cleaner and protectant on the fenders and bumpers. And there's been no fading or other damage -- they still look great after years of doing this.
He also said he sometimes uses the clear tire cleaner that he uses on the tires for the fenders & bumpers as well -- making sure not to it on the paint. (If I find which brand the tire cleaner is, I'll post an update here.)
I find your website quite interesting and wanted to ask some advice from the experts. I just bought a brand new 08 wrangler X which I like very much. I am interested in keeping it as prestine as possible. I am in New Orleans where it gets quite hot and humid and read your article about the raggtopp protectant for the top and windows so I ordered some without hesitation. I wanted to know if I should also use that on the plastic fenders and bumpers ? There is a product sold locally called "eagle one protectant" but it has silicone of some sort so I am a bit hesitant to use it.
Your input would be much appreciated. Thank you so much for taking the time..
Scott
Very nice article, would it be to much to ask you folks to buy a 2008 4 door JK and review it the same way. Might help me convince the wife why we need one. LOL
Loved your review. I have an '05 Unlimited myself and I love the utility, dependability and simplicity of such a machine. There is a "scan" button on my stock CD player - it's on the RH side just below the eject CD button. The light throttle was intolerable for me; Jeep forgot to install a throttle return spring, so I installed my own for about $3.00. Big difference! Highly recommended for those with lead feet like me. I like your take though -- Jeeps are Jeeps. They are truly a joy to drive. The worst thing about them is that they're so darned dependable. I like the idea that the design has changed so little in 50 years, while every other vehicle on the road gets a makeover every year or two. Bleh, Jeep Owners don't need a makeover! Why mess with perfection?
Just bought an '04 Wrangler X. I am closing in on 50 yrs and was not sure but it was love at first sight; she is bright yellow and really looks like alot of fun plus able to get around in our bad weather in the Midwest. We used to have a CJ5 when first married, that was over 25 years ago. Your website has been very interesting and educational, will come back again after driving for awhile.
GREAT COMMENTS, AND I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO A PURCHASE OF A JEEP SAHARA THIS WEEK. I HAD A 1998 WRANGLER, BUT SOON AFTER GAVE IT UP DUE TO IT WAS A STICK, AND THE MRS. CANT DRIVE THAT. I WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW I LIKE THE O8 MODEL
ok i had my 04 jeep for 2 weeks when all of a sudden i went outta control. only messed the bumper up thank god! but i wasnt driving stupied(50 in a 50), it was cold and the roads were wet. are jeeps normally not to good on wet pavement? im so anal now, and worry when driving on wet/slushy pavement
Just bought a 92 Wrangler a couple of weeks ago. I've been craving one since 1985....So, I finally found one for a great price, and I didn't even take it for a test ride before I said "I'll take it!".
Go Wrangler and you'll never look back.....except to make sure the kids are still in the back seat....sorry kids, that'll never happen again....JD
PS: Hope you're still enjoying the ride.
Hallo,
I'm mailing you from Holland/Europe. I'm also crazy about Jeep. Specially your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. A new (2007) Unlimited is to expencive for me. So I,m searching the internet for used Unlimiteds. But in Europe there is not one used Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for sale. Can you or anyboddy give me advice/tips/adresses where to search for this beautiful familycar.
Many thanks out of Holland,
Henny van Leeuwen
I recently purchased an '08 jeep wrangler x and absolutely love it, however, I can't play my burnt cds in the player why is that?
Very useful site. Thank you! I am about to buy (in the next few days) a 2001 Wrangler (2.5l automatic), and have a question. When I test-drove the vehicle, it seemed like the transmission would stubbornly not change gear until just over 3000rev, even if you are not accelerating. I'm worried this shows a serious probem in the transmission. You made a note along these lines in the comments above (12/31/06). I would appreciate any advice or warnings you (or anyone!) have on this. Thanks!
too long in the back, i have a 2001 jeep tj and its shorter.but a jeep is a jeep.
Hi Dee -
If you're referring to the back windows (on the sides) and the rear window (over the back door)... yes, a soft top typically comes with these in place. Our '04 did anyway.
They zip in and out, making the soft top itself usable with or without the vinyl windows in place.
Hope that helps.
We just picked up our "new" 2005 Wrangler Sport. This really comes with no windows for the soft top???? Should these have been included? Are we missing something? thanks!
I am haivng a hard time getting my soft top back on the correct way. The rear windows aren't staying put. They are blowing in the wind. Do you have to close the top in the back doors?? I have a 2007 Wrangler Unlimited 4x4 4-door ...love it..just wondering if something is wrong with the soft top???
Here you go, Jeff.
http://dogs.thefuntimesguide.com/2007/08/dogs_riding_in_cars.php
...Hope that helps. Have fun with your dogs and your Jeep!!!
I've enjoyed your website. I'm new to Jeep ownership and found your site the other day. Quick question: how do you restrain your dog in the back of a wrangler with the backseat removed? I have two dogs and am looking for a good solution. Thanks!
Love the site, and I agree fully with all the pros and cons.
My wife and I bought a 2006 Wrangler TJ Long. We are wrestling with removing the full doors. Can this be done without removing the paint covering the bolts? ....or do I just grind into it with an adjustable wrench???
THANKS
Hello Ben,
We just got around to putting together an article about removing Jeep doors. It's here.
Just purchased a '07 Wrangler. Didn't realize before my purchase that the passenger seat does not pop up and foward like the traditional wranglers. No one can tell me if Jeep has done away with this feature or what. Not even the dealerships here in Phx. They act like they don't don't know what i'm talking about. Does anyone know if this feature is truly gone in the 07's? It's now extremly hard to get in the backseat of a wrangler. Also, does anyone know if you can put an older model seat with that mechinism in the new 2007 model???? I'm thinking I'll just switch them out.
trying to install an aftermarket radio into the wrangler, anyone know how to hook the factory sub up to the radio (is there a separate amp for the sub), or what wires on the harnass are for the sub?
I am havinga very difficult time with my sunrider top. It has never worked and no one at the dealership can show me how to make it work. It really sucks because I cannot use the top and that is why I purchased my Wrangler. It was supposed to be a really easy thing i.e. to put the top back and forth (open top and closed) without having to take it all down and take the windows off. Can anyone offer me a suggestion?
Lynette,
Your site rocks! My husband and I are driving our 8th and 9th Jeeps currently ('07 Unlimited and Grand Cherokee). We've had Wranglers before and were sure we *knew it all* in regards to the soft top removal. Your advise on the Unlimited removal has been a relationship-saver! (:
We are *professionals* and like you, many days I go to work looking if I've spent the morning at the beach. I keep a little kit in my Jeep which keeps me looking tidy - and with the 4-door Unlimited, we are thrilled that our young boys can join us for open-air rides.
Thanks for spreading the good word and great information!
I believe the jeep owner's manual has that info in there about not driving over 45mph with the front windows open without removing the rear windows.
you state...
"However, Jeep recommends going no faster than 45mph with your front windows down AND the rest of your Jeep sealed up tight. It creates a vacuum... too much pressure inside"
just wondering where you found this info?
about the gas.....You actually consume less gas when accelerating faster than you do accelerating slower. It's a proving fact
Jon is technically correct, but there are many gotchas that prevent this from working in the real world.
If I remember correctly, the engine is most fuel efficient at the peak of the torque curve and peak torque means fast acceleration. This is a simple and proven fact.
So how can quick acceleration cause poor fuel efficiency?
The gain in efficiency is only recognized when you compare accelerating quickly to accelerating slowly for the same final speed.
In city driving you can either accelerate quickly or slowly between stops. If you accelerate quickly, you will often have a higher final speed before you need to apply the brakes than if you had accelerated slowly. The lower fuel efficiency from quick acceleration is partly a result of these higher final speeds.
Average speed also plays a role in fuel efficiency with loses from friction and wind resistance. Quick acceleration increases average speeds.
Quick acceleration will also increase wear and decrease efficiency in driveline components more rapidly. The result is more frictional loses that cause lower fuel efficiency.
Lastly... if you have an automatic transmission, it will be more difficult to control where on the torque curve you are operating the engine.
Sorry for the long post.
emily in regards to your questions:
buying a used jeep can save you some money, but not too much as they tend to hold their value. the 4.0L engine has a strong reputation as being reliable as well. do keep in mind that certain things will have to eventually replaced on a used jeep such as the soft top, old weathered fender flares, tires, etc. so that will factor into how much you will pay.
do not get a jeep if you are concerned about gas mileage. not good at all.
finally as for security, don't expect your jeep to keep your valuables secure, especially if it's a soft top, unless you install some sort of aftermarket steel lockable trunk.
hope this helps.
Hey, great review!!
I liked that you had both pros and cons for the Jeep!
I am 15 (nearly 16) and looking into buying a Jeep as my first car. I absolutely LOVE jeeps.
Anyway, my Dad is a stickler for safety, reliability, gas mileage etc.
I was wondering if you had an opinion on how used Jeeps measure up to a new Jeep.
My parents are also worried that with a soft-top it will be easier to for someone to break in to a jeep.
If you have any thoughts on those questions I would appreciate it!
Thanks!
Just traded in our 2004 Liberty for a 2007 Wrangler Unlimited 4 door. So far we love it. The Sun-rider soft-top is easy to open and goes so far back that we haven't had the need to take the top completely off. The HP leaves a lot to be desired but then again, that's not why you buy a Jeep. However, if they ever put a HEMI in a Wrangler, I would get in line for it:) I used to sell Jeeps back in 2005 so I can vouch for the fact that you really notice the 5" extra width and 20" extra length. Not only has the room improved but the ride is much smoother. The seats are more comfortable than the older Liberty's and Wranglers. No reason you shouldn't be comforable when bouncing around on a trail/street. I wish I had gotten the upgraded Infinity spkr pkg though. THe radio is great (MP3 jack, Sirius Radio, 6 CD changer) but the basic speakers are not so great. The Texas sun is a "killer" so I appreciate the upkeep advice for the soft top in this blog. I've never owned a convertable before so the info here is great. So far I have only purchased a cab cover and a Front-end mask for it but I assume there will soon be a ton of accessories for the 2007 models to choose from. A lighter wallet should increase my gas mileage:) Right?
Go check out the new Wrangler. It's a nice addition to the Jeep line-up. Be safe!
i have a 2003 wrangler and I'm trying to figure out how to get the interior lights to not come on when I remove the doors. They eventually turn off but not for maybe a half hour after i've gotten out. I tried taking out the #4 fuse today when I got out, but the lights stayed on. How can i get them to not come on?
This is a great run down and very informative, so thank you. It's hard to actually get a good feel for a vehicles by reading the magazine articles because they're always picky. I am looking to get one of the 2 door Unlimited models (like yours) and again this was great. Any idea how much the hard top weighs for these opposed to the regular wheelbase Wrangler?
Thanks,
Tim
My husband and I are going to be looking for a new vehicle for me in about 9 months. My current car was T-boned and since I have always wanted a Jeep, I thought now would be a good time to start researching. He wants to make sure it is completely safe since my accident. He thinks that the Jeeps are a little top heavy and a side impact might overturn the vehicle. I have been researching safety features and although the 2007 has some more features that previous years lack (anti-lock bracks and side-impact airbags) he wants to know that I will be safe. Has anyone been in a side impact accident and what was the outcome. Could someone direct me to the right research so I can prove my point and get the vehicle of my dreams?
I was reading the comment on 13 March about how to keep the interior lights off when the doors are off. I have a cheaper method. When I bought my used Jeep the interior lights would not come on. Turns out someone had cut a hanger and placed the long straight rod over the door switched and looped the ends under 2 of the bolts (one above and one below the switch) in the door way. To turn the lights on, just slip the rod off the switch. It's easy to go from on to off and on again for pennies.
I recently bought a used 1999 Jeep Wrangler. It has a soft top. I am having a problem with the rear window. After it was taken off, I can't seem to get the zipper to line up and zip. Any suggestions to make this easier??
Joe...of course your going to get less gas mileage with bigger tires! The bigger the tire, the harder the engine has to work to spin those things to get you moving! I have a 4" lift with 33x10.5's and there is definitly a difference! If your doing alot of off-roading, keep an eye on your air filter (they get really dirty!)...if the engine cant breathe, thats going to factor into your gas mileage also.
funny you mention it M2 because i am missing that very same pivot pin! i'm just using a long bolt to keep the two rods connected - no nut as the tension of the two rods keeps it in place. still, frustrating trying to find a replacement pin.
The easiest way to stop the dome lights from staying on when you remove the doors is to remove the #4 fuse from behind the glovebox. But be aware that the same fuse works the 'lights on' reminder!
You can also bypass the fog lights going off when you use the high beams by bending back the upper lefthand tab on the fog light relay located in the fuse box right behind the air filter. Turn it so the three prongs are on the top, then bend the leftmost tab outward. Circumvents the fog lights from cutting off when you use the high beams.
Now, I am missing one of the pivot pins from the sunrider on my '05 Unlimited...anyone know where to get a replacement?? Right now I am using a bolt and nut, but it prevents the locking mechanism from sliding in place.
Cheers! M2
in response to jay regarding feeling like his auto wrangler is bogging down, try turning off overdrive. helps give you more accelearation when merging onto freeways.
TO THE GIRLS...if you have hair long enough to use a scrunchy, that's whjat my wife uses...we have a small bag of them in the Jeep, and one or two on the shifter. That takes care of the hair.
I have an 05 Unlimited Rubicon, with the Sunrider soft top (my first Jeep). I fell in love with it before I got out of the dealer parking lot.
That same day I pinstriped it on a forest service road, got high centered on a patch of snow, and had to get towed off of it.
The first thing I did was get an aftermarket radio that would play my burned CDs...that consist of WMA files. These are compressed, and I can get about 200 songs on one CD.
I added rocker bars, and beefy front and back bumpers, and Raingler cargo netting. The last item has made my Jeep a more secure vehicle than it would otherwise be. I also got a Tuffy lockbox for the rear. We put sweatshirts, blankets, first aid kit, etc. in there...just like a trunk.
For excursions, I bought an off-road capable trailer from Adventure Trailers. Pricey, but CAPABLE. It goes anywhere I can go.
Regarding the touchy gas pedal...I have the 4L I-6 and the 6-speed manual. Even with those 31-inch MTRs, I can easily get rubber in at least three gears unless I watch it.
This Jeep is heaven...I've not had it two years, and I have 40K miles on it...many on dirt at 5MPH.

I found a way to keep the interior lights off when I have my doors off. Here is the Ebay auction that has them.
They work great and are very cheap!
Joe,seems to me that the mileage you are getting is what you would get when in four wheel drive on the trail! I get approx 16-19 on the highway in two wheel drive with 33x12.50 tires stock 3.73 ratio and auto trans on my 04 unlimited. I do have a Safari intake snorkel that may help a little. Anyway, Wrangler Jeeps are not daily transportation gas mizers. I carry two five gallon gas cans on an external rear rack when four wheeling just in case. Make sure your airfilter is clean and the trans is shifting into overdrive on the hwy.
just purchased an 05 unlimited with aftermarket rims and tires slightly bigger than stock my problem id the gas mileage im getting 11 mpg city and 14 hwy is this possible???
I would like to add that the comments about heat under the drivers floor are a surprise to me as I havn't felt any heat there at all. However, I never drive without my shoes. Also at first I thought that the throttle was sensitive but now have found out that with the auto trans it's a perfect match for four wheeling. Same for the power steering! Wish I could afford an 07 Rubicon unlimited for the extra STUFF carrying capacity. Or a Pinzgauer 710/12 4/6 wheel drive former Swiss army vehicle! For now my unlimited is making it fun an easy exploring the Arizona desert. Hate the clean up afterwards!
I love my poor man's hummer 04 unlimited hard top. Have put 7,000 miles on it in less than a year of part time driving without any problems what so ever. Half of those miles in the Arizona desert in an out of four wheel drive. Since I bought it I have added a Safari snorkel intake,ARB front bumper,Warn winch, fender flare extensions, rear tire gas can and hi-lift jack carrier,Mickey Thompson radials 33x12.50 tires with 10 inch wide alum wheels. Also door arm rests and neopreme slip on seat covers. The jeep had a three inch suspension lift when I bought it from the second owner. Had to buy a ramp to help get my old dog aboard.
GREAT site! I too recently sold my 98 TJ when I left Hawaii. I knew I wanted an Unlimited for the extra room, beefier rear axle, and all the "extras" with the Unlimited package. I almost bought an 07, but found an almost-new 06 with 9000 miles, and in my favorite color, Khaki. I saved about $8K over what the 07 cost, and enjoy it every day! Great info on the U shaped "feet" of the #1 bow not sitting on the rail. My problem is, I can't get both feet to sit on both rails at the same time, almost like the bow is too narrow. Anyone else have this problem? Other than that, I'm happy as can be with my Unlimited.
This comment is for the girls. I own a '97 Jeep Wrangler, and I absolutely love it. I have found various ways of keeping my hair under control while driving with the top down. My favorite way to wear my hair is with pigtails or a baseball cap, or both - which is how I normally wear it on the trail. If I have the top down, and need to be presentable, I wear a cute beach type hat or any other hat for that matter to keep the hair out of my eyes while I'm driving. Then I use the brush I keep in the center console to straighten up when I get where I'm going.
I have an 06 Rubicon Unlimited with 4 in lift, bumpers, winch, and much more. I have just taken it back for the 6th time (in 6 the months I have owned it) for the heat in the floor. This heat is the heater not cutting off. That is the reason the floor is not hot to the touch. I also get about 11.9 mpg with the stock tires. The dealer said that it was my driving before I explaned that this was the milage at 65 with the cruise on, and that I get 12.8 with the new 33.5 tall tires over the 31 in. stockers. Good luck with your jeep purchase. I wish I had my 83 Cj7 back it had just as many problems, but no $650 a month payment.
Hi Jay,
In answer to your question... nope, we've never experienced anything like you've mentioned when accelerating. It never seems like it's shifting too soon or anything.
Perhaps, as you said, you are just getting used to the "differences" between your old and new vehicles. We went through something similar with our other car. At first, the gas pedal seemed WAY too touchy, it didn't seem safe. But after driving it for about 4 months, we can finally say we don't even notice it anymore. I guess it just took some getting used to.
The only thing is... if you notice that your Jeep obviously -- very noticeably -- rev's higher than any other car you've driven, then we'd probably have it looked at.
Not sure that helped much...
Enjoy your Unlimited!!!!
Excellent review guys.
I have the exact silver jeep that you show in your pictures and think this is too one of the best purchses I have made.
One thing I wanted to ask you that I have noticed is when accelerating on a busy road or the highway being that it is an automatic do you notice that the gears are almost shifting to soon? It almost seems to bog down until I have to give it more push. I have only owned it for about 3 months now and am probably thinking I am just getting used to it coming from a Toyota Tacoma.
Anyway great site!!
Jay
Hi there I bought a 2006 wrangler with the i 6 and automatic transmission. I have over 700 miles and drive it city and highway and get round 180 miles to a tank of gas. I have talked to the dealer about this and was told to give it 3000 miles to let the seals place. Is this true or was the dealer brushing me off. I was hoping to get closer to the 14/18 as the sticker said.
Great review. I have a 2005 Unlimted and love it. Best truck I have ever owned and my third jeep.
Keep up the great work.
I'm looking to buy my first Jeep- within the next year-I've always wanted one-just visiting various web sites, to find out what I can about the pros and cons of owning a Jeep
I test drove a 2006 wrangler rubicon and it is awesome. I am in my mid 50's and it makes me feel young giving me a big smile when I drove it. However, I resisted the impulse buy, and have been searching for pros and cons of owning one. I have heard the rough ride, gas milage, lack of storage, and security issues which in my opinion isnt such a big thing. What I am looking for to help make my mind up is reliability issues such as what probelms people have had with the 2006 or even 2005. In other words what is prone to failure on it. Thanks
I will continue to visit enjoyed the reading thanks
Just bought an 06 Wrangler Unlimited last week, and I'm absolutely in love with it. Top goes up/down in about 10 min if I'm doing it myself, and it keeps getting easier as I figure out the tricky spots.
The ride is stiff, but I hope no one is put off by how drastically some reviewers play this up- it's not a luxury car, but was anyone really confused about this? The ride is fine. It is a tall step up into the car (I'm 6 foot and am still getting used to it) but it's not mountain climbing.
And as everyone has noted, driving with the top down is simply the most fun I have ever had driving any vehicle in my life.
The radio is simple but the seven factory speakers are more than adequate- it goes up to the max volume without distortion, and the sub-woof by the driver's seat lets you literally feel the bass. Basically, I agree with the idea that you'll either love it or hate it- but if it's the car you want and you're wavering, go ahead and get it. It will not dissapoint.
oh- and thanks for the tip on the window bag- I've been wondering how to store those things without getting them all scratched up!
What a fantastic site. I'm about to turn 50 in December and I have always wanted a Jeep, so I just purchased an 06 Wrangler Unlimited. I love it. I wish I had bought one 20 years ago. The information posted here has been a tremendous help. Thanks for a GREAT site.
I also bought a hair piece that I keep in my glove box to keep my hair looking cute after a topless ride. I just clip it in and look as cute as ever.
Just bought an 05 Wrangler! LOVE IT :o) I can take the top down myself and cruise around town. I think it is an awesome girl car! This is by far the coolest ride ever!!
After buying my 2006 soft top Jeep Wrangler, I wanted to get some advise on how to protect my top.
Thankfully, I came upon your website and read away. It was SO informative and quite honestly helped me out so much.
I live in Las Vegas, and I think I went to about every Autozone, PepBoys, Checkers, trying to find the Bestop Protectant that you suggested. I finally found some bottles at a great 4X4 shop. I was so happy to finally try this product, and just like you said IT'S GREAT!!! It really makes my top look really nice, and it's not oily or collects stuff.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for helping people like me, very cool of you.
Rick
This comment is for sherri and others looking to BUY an OLDER jeep wrangler.
First off if the deal seems to good walk away. But then speaking specifically from my own experience DO NOT BUY an 87 jeep wrangler with the 4.2liter inline 6 carburated engine & manual tranny, unless you plan on an engine and transmission swap. The carburated engine will almost never idle smoothly for more than a month despite being serviced by multiple jeep specific mechanics. Also, 87 wranglers came with a pugeot 5 speed manual transmission. This is a car transmission and will not hold up to even mild offroad excursions. Personally I would look for any 92 or newer with the 4.0 liter engine and a manual or auto transmission. I have had great luck with my 2000 and now my 2004. This comment is probably coming a little late, just recently stumbled on your site in my random jeep searching online(now its bookmarked).
For those wondering where all 7 speakers are in their TJ or unlimited wranglers. They are placed as follows: Two in the overhead sound bar. Four in the dash behind the knee level speaker grilles(2 per side). How's this you ask? One mid-range woofer and one tweeter per side. If you pull off the covers you'll know what I'm talking about when you see them. That brings us up to six. The final speaker is a small(6-6.5 inch) subwoofer mounted in the center console. The grille can be seen from the driver's side when the seat is slid forward. This was one of the first things I figured out after spending some time installing an aftermarket cd player & speakers in my new 04 unlimited. By the way the factory 7 speaker sound system is by far the best ever offered in a wrangler(you can hear it on the highway with the top down and doors off)but some of us like to make a good thing great:)
To the 15 year old girl wanting a Jeep Wrangler, I bought my then 16 year daughter a '97 Jeep Wrangler Sport with a chrome package added at the dealership. Let me rephrase that... The Jeep was community property. Sis got to drive it to school and everywhere else teens have to go, but 'ol Dad cleaned on it every weekend and enjoyed cruising when it was available. I too looked at the safety rating and felt that the Jeep was just as safe, if not safer, than most of what the other teens were driving. The only problem we had was that with her having the only Jeep in school everyone wanted to ride with her. She had the coolest ride any teen could ever want.....or any Dad.
Bought my Silver 05 Unlimited "LJ" in March of '06 for my b-day. Only thing I had to bring it back in for was the Canopy rig pin that you pop out to take the top down. I busted the cap off the pin while taking the top down. I did not remove the rear quarter panel sails from the grooves before disconnecting the 2 pins. If you unlatch the front then take the qtr panel sails out of the grooves it relieves the tension so the pins come out easier. Also, I have been using vaseline on the zippers so they slide easier, wax works great too.
On a side note, The only reason my wife hasn't taken it from me is that she doesn't feel safe leaving items like her laptop or business items in the Jeep. I told her we can trade cars for her BMW 318ti if she buys a hard top or rear storage locker for me. :-)
"Jeep Love" to the owners out there! You all know what I mean. (wink)
I love your review! I realize I may need to avoid jeeps for now because of gas mileage... I should keep my Honda car since $15 fills it up just above the halfway line.
I've been a big fan of jeeps, basically because my uncle used to drive me around in his jeeps all the time. I have always wanted one and only now am thinking about trading for one.
My only question may be incredibly stupid because I'm still ignorant about jeeps, but... Can you get a wrangler without leather stuff in it? I'm a vegetarian and I can't stand leather, lol.
You are awesome!!! i can't afford a new jeep so i would go with an older one. this would be more of a toy/back up car. I just think a jeep would be so much fun!! I have heard that some older models have lots of problems and wasn't sure if you knew what years to stay away from.
thanks again

In answer to your question...
I would venture to guess that you'd get a different reply from guys than you would from girls on this one.
Speaking from the female perspective... I would rather have a "newer" Jeep, because things like "safety when I'm out & about alone, overall look, and some modern conveniences" are relatively important to me.
My husband, on the other hand, is just as content owning an older (more "rugged") Jeep. One that, in addition to being used as a daily driver, could also be taken offroad and you not have to worry about scratching it or getting it dirty. Not to mention the fact that most guys (and some girls) like to "tinker" under the hood, and that means they're completely fine with repairing whatever might go wrong in an older Jeep -- either on the spot, or over the course of a few weekends in the garage.
We've had both... an older Jeep Wranger (1990) and a brand new Jeep Wrangler (2004). I've enjoyed the newer one a bit more -- day in and day out. Hubby has had equal amounts of fun in both -- the older and the newer one.
At first, Jim had a hard time getting past the fact that the newer Jeeps look so "modern" and "new-car-like", rather than rugged basic model Jeeps from the good 'ol days (mostly on the inside... instrument panel, gear shift, etc).
Overall, we had a BALL in our older Wrangler, and we certainly never feared getting caught in the rain without our soft top on, or trapsing mud onto the floorboards or seat covers. Or scratching it up while out on the trail. There's something to be said about a Jeep that you just have FUN in, and don't have to worry about keeping it in tip-top shape. Looks aren't everything...
But we also had many more on-the-spot repairs in the older Jeep -- such as the time our radiator hose burst on a deserted country road and Jim had to hitchike a ride to the gas station and back to repair it with a new hose. Or the time our brakes started smoking when we were en route to another state for the weekend. Or the time we didn't think it would pass inspection, because of exhaust issues.
I am not familiar with specific years of Jeeps that should be avoided.
Personally, I'd say go with a newer Jeep if you can... unless you are (or you've got) a handyman who likes to tinker with minor Jeep repairs every month or so.
Hope that helps some.
Great review! I just bought a Rubicon 9 days ago and LOVE it! My question is, does ANYone know where the location is for all 7 speakers? I've looked and internet searched, but to no avail.
Thanks!
hi
I have been wanting a jeep wrangler for years and I guess i am going thru mid life thing and have decided to seriously look into getting one! I Have heard that some of the older year models are not good and was wondering what year models i should avoid. thanks
sherri
please email response!!
We're thinking about buying a Sunrider top for our 97 Jeep. Have you had any problems with wind noise when the top is up? Do you feel the Sunrider top has any negatives we may not be aware of. We can't seem to find one to actually look at without ordering one.
Hi Lynette
Here is a hint for the soft top windows...use spray pledge after you clean em. It will fill in the scratches and works great. I used it on my wrangler windows for that reason.
Hi!
I found your reveiw while searching for information on this jeep. I just traded in my blue 2003 basic Wrangler for the red 2006 Wrangler Unlimited, and I absolutely love it! Every time I park it, I have to turn back to look at it again. Like you, we weren't actually shopping for a new jeep, but had gone to the dealer to trade my husband's Titan truck for a new one. We came home with both!
I can identify with the woman who previously wrote that she was 50 and longing for a jeep. I am also in my early 50's, and driving a jeep, especially this one, makes me feel like a kid again! It's just so much fun.
When I first got it, I tried driving with the sunrider top open. I know exactly what you mean about the hair in the eyes problem! I guess that's what those jeep caps are for! I had an awful time trying to pay attention to driving while trying to fight the hair flying in my face!

As for a way to turn off the dome lights inside your Jeep when you have the doors off, we opted for the dome light switch depressor. Or, you could try this dome light bypass switch.
When you loosen the nuts to take off the doors, it's almost impossible to avoid scratching the paint a bit. We simply recommend buying some touch-up paint, but the odds are it won't be that noticeable if you're careful.
As to the side mirrors...
Fortunately, here in Tennessee, it's not illegal to ride without side mirrors, and we've done so for years. However, this summer we plan to buy some side mirrors.
I must say, we never really felt "comfortable" riding around without side-view mirrors. But somehow, we always managed. Will let you know how the side mirrors work out for us.
Just wanted to say great review on the Unlimited. Very accurate in all areas.
I have a 2004 Unlimited and love it. I am installing an Air Raid Performance Intake System as well as a new High Performance MagnaFlow Exhaust System next week and will be glad to let you know how the increase of HP and better gas milage is. The sound will be sweet as well. I would really like to know more about removing the doors on this thing as well as how you were able to keep the interior lights off while doors were not on.
How do you remove the nuts with out scraping up the paint by the hinges etc. Did you also buy additional mirror attachments that fit in the hinges with doors off? Here in Pa it is law to have mirrors at all times.
Appreciate your input.
Have you all seen the 2007 Wrangler???!!!! SEXY! Smart ideas with the new 3 piece hard top, etc. Check it out!!!!!

We think a Jeep Wrangler is a great car for a first-time driver!
They're very basic vehicles with few "extra" features, so they're also a bit easier to maintain and repair. Plus, they hold their value VERY well, so if/when you decide to sell it, you can be sure that you'll get a fair price for your Jeep!
As to their safety ratings, check out NHTSA's crash test & rollover ratings for Jeep Wranglers. They're not bad at all -- especially for newer years.
Is a Jeep a "girl car"?... Heck yeah! I wish I had a Wrangler for my first vehicle. If a Jeep fits your personality, then go for it... there are PLENTY of Jeep Girls in this day & age.
Perhaps what your grandmother is referring to is the fact that Jeep Wranglers are famous for being taken off-road and "roughed up" a bit. Typically, offroading (or four-wheeling) is an activity enjoyed mostly by the guys, but more and more girls are getting involved too!
Whether you take your Jeep Wrangler off-road or not is irrelevant to whether or not a Jeep Wrangler is a good vehicle for a girl, or a good vehicle for a first-time driver.
Whatever you decide to do, make sure you test-drive a couple of Jeep Wranglers first. They "feel" a bit different than other cars.
You'll know if it's the right car for you after you drive one a bit...
And read all you can about what other people think of their Jeeps. You'll learn a lot about them that way.
One thing's for sure... people either LOVE Jeeps or they don't.
hi, im a 15 year old female and I am dying for a Jeep Wrangler! i love them sooo much! my grandmother says there dangerous cuz theyre top heavy and they are not a "girl" car cuz they are a rough ride. I disagree and think if you drive good its safe. What do you think for a first time driver?
Hi, I am 50y/o and all my life I am dreaming for a jeep. So recently I was toying with the idea of rent one and see if it works for me. This new 2006 it will be the year. So thank you, You gave the map to follow.
Happy new year.
PS I will keep you posted.

Basically, it "clamps" on. Think of big, strong clamps -- similar to those used to keep the hood shut...
There are two main features which secure the soft top to the Jeep:
1. To keep the soft top in place at its center point (above the driver/passenger head area), there is a big pin that locks into place (near the area described in the "update" photo above). This pin keeps the soft top from rolling back over the rear of the Jeep.
2. Then, to keep the soft top securely in place up front, it clamps onto the windshield frame -- above the visors. It also "hooks on" over the driver & passenger windows too.
There are no snaps involved at all. It folds down (into the rear of the Jeep) in one piece -- with the windows removed. And it folds UP in one piece -- just need to add the windows afterwards.
Thanks,
But i have another question,
How does the top stay on does it snap on?
Kelcie -
Yes it does! It's amazing how toasty warm the Jeep Wrangler stays... even with the soft-top on in the winter.
We've had our Jeep in below-freezing temps, and found that we can't even run the heater on "high" because it gets TOO hot. :o)
Does the jeep wrangler stay warm in the winter with the soft top on?
great site I just purchased a 2004 RUBICON (not the unlimited) but I love it.take it easy
Thank you Lynette. That makes more sense. I need to get in practice with the Sunrider option, it's something I haven't done yet.
Do you ever have only the back window open and no others? I read in my manual that fumes can get inside the car and it is strongly discouraged, but I see people doing it all the time.
Thanks again!
-Marnie
Marnie -
Absolutely... you should be able to drive with your glass windows down while the entire soft top is attached. (We can in our '04 Unlimited.)
However, Jeep recommends going no faster than 45mph with your front windows down AND the rest of your Jeep sealed up tight. It creates a vacuum... too much pressure inside.
So, whenever your front windows are down, and your soft top is attached & sealed tight, you just need to roll up (open) the back window, and you'll be fine to drive whatever speed you wish without a problem.
Opening the Sunrider top has the same effect as opening the back window -- it releases the air pressure inside the Jeep.
Quick question:
Are you able to drive with your regular front windows down while the entire top is attached? I've got an 05 Unlimited and if I roll down my window my top sounds like it's going to break and fly off the car. I don't remember this during my test drive so I am wondering if I didn't put the top back on right after taking it down.
Thanks!

I love my Unlimited Rubicon~) Great review, all of it right on. My brother has a Rubicon and my father is the original owner of a 1960 CJ. Nothing like a jeep! Glad you are enjoying yours...
Maria -
Sure... the floor area (especially on the driver's side) seems to get a bit hotter than the passenger side. It's not hot to the touch or anything though.
It's more like... it's a small space where the heat from the engine tends to gather & collect after you've driven for awhile.
I've noticed the same effect in other vehicles, it's just more pronounced in the Jeep. (Smaller space probably)
HOWEVER, here's how "minor" it is... Jim says he doesn't even really notice it. I'm thinking I notice it more because I usually drive with my shoes off -- no matter what time of year it is.
Again, it's not hot to the touch or anything like that... it's just that the air is much warmer down there.
Hope that helps. :o)
P.S. Go for the Jeep Wrangler... we LOVE it!
Hi. I'd like to buy a wrangler but that cons about the floor getting hot worries me. Can you give me more specifics please? thank you
Matt --
Thanks for sharing!
I checked out your website... great photos -- when are we going to get to see some of your Jeep? :o)
Great review & I love my new Rubicon Unlimited as well.
