How To Clean Jeep Windows & Best Products To Use

Our two Jeep Wranglers... a 1990 Jeep Wrangler YJ and a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited TJ.If you own a Jeep (we've owned 3), especially a Jeep Wrangler (we've owned 2), then you already know the appearance of the soft top and windows plays a large part in determining how good your Jeep looks... and how it will look for years to come.

Here's everything you need to know about how to clean the windows on your Jeep Wrangler, plus which products are the best to use that won't damage your soft top windows.

How To Clean Jeep Windows

Perhaps the easiest (and safest) way to care for your vinyl soft top and its plastic windows is to clean the entire surface with a mild dishwashing detergent and warm water. You could also choose a product specifically designed for cleaning Jeep windows and soft top convertibles (see below).

Here are some do's & don'ts to remember when cleaning the windows on your Jeep Wrangler soft top:

DO...

  • DO use a CLEAN soft terry cloth or cotton rag to wash your windows

  • DO wipe the windows from left to right or right to left to clean them

  • DO use a CLEAN soft terry towel or cotton rag to dry the entire surface after washing

  • DO rinse thoroughly to completely remove whatever cleaning agent you've used

  • DO apply a protectant to ultimately protect and extend the life of your entire soft top and its plastic/vinyl windows

DON'T:

  • DO NOT use bleach -- it will strip the soft top's vinyl and plastic windows of their natural properties

  • DO NOT use common household cleaning products -- they tend to contain silicone or petrolem solvents

  • DO NOT use household spray window cleaners -- they tend to contain alcohol and/or ammonia which will rapidly dry out the natural oils in your windows

  • DO NOT use paper towels on the windows -- they will definitely scratch your windows

  • DO NOT apply much pressure while cleaning -- because even the smallest particles of dirt can scratch the window

  • DO NOT wipe in a circular or swirling pattern -- this goes aganst the natural grain of the Jeep windows themselves and could create scratches

Best Products For Cleaning Jeep Windows

Dirty Jeep windows -- after spending a day at Tellico. So, which product should you use to clean your Jeep's windows? There are many to choose from, yet not all are safe for the windows, and some will even cause Jeep windows to fog, yellow or crack.

As longtime Jeep owners, we have only used Jeep-specific cleaning products when we wash our soft top and its windows. As a result, our windows have always looked great because of it.

Not only is the application process is easy -- just spray it on, then wipe it dry -- these products will remove even the toughest soils, while repelling dust and dirt and preventing mildew from forming on your soft top. At the same time, they leave no residue, leaving you with a fresh clean surface.

Clean Jeep windows after a proper cleaning with Raggtopp cleaner. If you plan to own your Jeep for many years, and you care about how it looks, then chances are, you too will only want to use "the best" products when cleaning & maintaining your Jeep.

Hey, all,

Thanks for the info. I'll go look up Raggtop.

Any info on sailcloth repair? Where the softop folds, accordion-like, I've developed a tear in the fabric (area that goes above the front doors, where the drip trays fold).

Any ideas? seems like it's just fatique from wear an tear being folded in that same area from me and the previous owner.

Thanks in advance.

Someone told me about using Plege for my plastic windows on my jeep Any help

I agree with James. DON'T use products like Pledge on your Jeep.

The worst effects of using non-Jeep friendly products are:

1) Dust, dirt (and dog fur) will stick like glue to your dashboard, windows, zippers, etc.

2) Your Jeep's dashboard, windows, etc will start to crack, fade, and break down much earlier than normal.

if you mean 'Pledge' as in the furniture polish (I am from the UK originally so that is what springs immediately to mind) then i would be careful about the fact that it probably contains either wax or similar. Wax would be the worst thing as it would start top coat the window with crap, i think the other kind would leave a film too. Test ona small area first or preferably someone elses jeep!

Well I ended up going to a recreation vehicle place called Camping World in Gulf Breeze and they all the stuff I needed to make it shine. Protector was the best and I used it on everything. Dash, seats, doors, top and the canvas on the windows, worked great. They also have other produts to enhance the jeep there I thought were handy, they are for rv's but work great on any vehicle.

james said:

you mention spraying on raggtopp cleaner and then wiping dry but the bottle says spray on and then RINSE THOROUGHLY (in caps too!) The protector say's just wipe dry.
which should i do?

The protector also says it;s good for dashboard and side door panels, anyone tried it? Products like Armour All somtimes leave a residue that ultimately collects dust a bit, is this the same?

Lynnette said:

Hi James,
Well I guess you should follow the directions for *best* results. But we don't rinse off the cleaner, we just wipe it off. (Maybe our windows are getting a little OVER conditioned that way, since there's always a bit of the product still on our windows?)

As for comparing it to Armour All, etc... you're right most products leave that annoying residue on your Jeep's interior. This doesn't. That's why we like it.

Shane -
We've used the 2-step method from Day One on the windows and the soft top itself (Raggtopp cleaner, followed by Raggtopp protectant) and it has worked marvelously for us. Our Jeep's soft top and windows are in great shape -- almost 3 years later.

We started with Raggtopp, because it's the product most frequently recommended on Jeep sites. Since there were so many other Jeepers who've used this product for years, we trusted their advice -- and they were right.

You would probably want to combine the 303 Cleaner with the 303 Protectant. I think they work better together than alone.

Anyone else have any advice about the 303 Protectant product?

Hi, great site and very useful! However, i am a little unsure of which product to use to protect my jeep windows and soft top, are 2 seperate items needed or would the 303 protectant work for the whole cover or just the windows?
