Tips For Dogs Riding In Cars & Jeeps

destin-and-jersey-inside-the-car.jpg Like most people, we take our dogs for car rides... a lot! We have for years.

Then, when Jim & I purchased our first Jeep Wrangler several years ago, we then started taking our dogs on Jeep rides (...instead of car rides).

Here's what we've learned, firsthand, about dogs riding in cars -- particularly, the safest way to travel with your dog in a car or a Jeep.

One-Of-A-Kind Jeep Toys For Jeep Dogs

As I've said before, dogs love Jeeps... especially our dog Tenor, who is the world's biggest Jeep dog! And there's nothing better than a Jeep ride with your dog. We take our dog for rides in the Jeep just about every day -- year round.

But I have to say, I've never seen Jeep-related dog toys like this before...

Dogs Love Jeeps! Tenor Is A Jeep Dog... In Training

jeep-dog-on-natchez-trace.jpgThis is Tenor. He likes Jeeps.

But it wasn't always so.

It has taken us about 2 months of "going for a ride in the car" practically every single day to get him accustomed to the unbalanced nature of riding in the back of a Jeep Wrangler. (Had we started when he was younger, it probably would have been much easier.)

Plus, since we took the back seat out, there's a lot of open space back there -- especially in a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. It has taken him some time to get used to all the twists and turns, starts and stops.

Don't worry... From day one, he's been tethered to the seatbelt with a doggie harness every time he goes for a ride in the Jeep. But still, it took him awhile to truly get comfortable riding back there.

Here are some highlights...

  • An expandable telescoping mirror like this is great for finding hidden caches when geocaching offroad.
  • Notice the 2 red arrows -- one points to the T-shaped handle for the manual door pull. The other points to the limited space between the Jeep and the door opening.
  • Our Jeep Wrangler Unlimited before we drove it off the lot with its new lift kit and tires.
  • Evening: A look at the Jeep on the road moments after we added the new lift kit and tires.

  • Jim driving the Jeep -- as viewed from my rearview mirror. A decent perspective of how high up the Jeep is... enough, but not a lot.
  • Jim's egress is much better than mine now that the Jeep has been lifted somewhere between 4 to 5 inches. He's 6 foot 4.
  • Our Jeep Wrangler Unlimited on the lift at 4WheelParts in Nashville. At this point, they just had to put the 'new spare tire' on.
  • Our Jeep up on the racks at 4WheelParts, next to some serious offroad vehicles!
  • Our Jeep arriving at the 4WheelParts store in Nashville. "We're here to get a lift kit, and tires, and rims please."
