Jim and I have owned 3 different Jeep Wranglers since 2004. Before that, we rented Jeep Wranglers and took them offroad during our vacations.

For the most part our Jeeps have been daily drivers rather than offroad warriors, but we still enjoy taking them offroad once in awhile.

While we’ve enjoyed popular offroad parks from time to time — like Tellico ORV Park — we actually prefer taking the road less traveled when we’re offroad (using Forest Road Maps as our guide) instead.

Here’s why:

Fewer people, crowds, noise, cars

A greater sense of adventure while exploring parts unknown

Finding a fork in the road and choosing our own course

The challenge of making your way back to civilization

If you, too, think you would like the adventure associated with exploring little-known roads and trails, here’s what you need to know about Forest Service Roads and Forest Service Maps.

However, we recently tried a new product on our Jeep Wrangler soft top, vinyl windows, and all of the glass windows too.

Goodbye suburbia, you’re about to grab some of that fresh air and fantastic scenery of the wide open country.

You’re also about to test drive your Jeep to see how well it does away from the smooth pavement of the asphalt jungle.

Oh man, no more congested traffic, no more idling at stop lights, no more viewing the same monotonous routine of monotonous building after building. You’re ready to take a real adventure.

<img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-13749" title="Thinking of taking your Jeep offroad?

Before you start out, there is one very important factor to consider: how much clearance does your Jeep have between its under-carriage and the pavement?

Jim has gone offroading in Sedona, Arizona twice. I’ve been once.

Photos from each trip are included here.

Both times, we were 4wheeling on the Broken Arrow Trail inside the Coconino National Forest.

The Red Rock Country in Sedona, Arizona was named the Most Beautiful Place in America by the USA Weekend’s Annual Travel Report.

Welcome To Sedona!

Here we are, entering the most beautiful little city in Arizona… Sedona. This, after our 3AM departure from the Phoenix hotel. Followed by a far-too-many-hours-long drive north to the Grand Canyon (in the snow). But it was well worth it! Sedona is amazing.

Beautiful Red Rock Country: Sedona, Arizona

While in Arizona, we had hoped to see 5 specific things:
1. The desert (we mistakenly thought that Arizona’s desert would resemble the Sahara or Mojave deserts. Not exactly!)
2. Tall cactus (or “cacti” as Jim called them the whole time)
3. Pueblos (we envisioned adobe housing structures in every direction, but basically all we saw were single-story mobilehome-type domiciles with air conditioners on the roofs)
4. Picturesque rock formations (like we had only seen in pictures up to this point)
5. Beautiful scenery (…could anything really top the white sandy beaches we’d spent most of our adult lives worshiping in Florida?)

After being slightly let down by the first 3 (or lack thereof) in the Phoenix area on Day One, we were delighted to find that Sedona had last 2 covered!

Our 11AM Appointment… That We Were Late For

Jim had chatted with Nena several times before regarding her Jeep website and her article about Jeep Tours that appears here on our Jeep site. But they never really “met” until now! She works in partnership with Farabee’s Jeep Rentals (now Barlow Jeep Rentals) which is where we began our off-road adventure with her on this day.

Sedona’s Broken Arrow Trail

This was our first time offroading so far off the beaten path. We’ve done our share of trail rides, water crossings and unmarked roads… but to this point, we had never tried offroading on limestone slickrock with cliffs, valleys and drop-offs in every direction! The Broken Arrow Trail itself is named after the 1950 Jimmy Stewart movie — which was filmed at this location.

About To Hit The High Country

Nena played tour guide to 2 completely entranced tourists (me and Jim) who were in awe of every single thing along the way. From the sheer beauty of the Red Rock that surrounded us in the Coconino National Forest… to the slick mountain rock that our Jeep managed to climb with ease… to the magnitude of nature and all that is natural. Pssst… Jim was excited to learn that Ephedra (which has been banned in this country) grows naturally along the Broken Arrow Trail in Sedona. Thus, a return visit is definitely in order!

Rocky Mountain High

It takes about 2 hours to do the Broken Arrow Trail… give or take. We stopped many times along the way to take pictures and take in the view. There are about a dozen off-road trails for you to choose from in Sedona. This was one of the milder ones. Perhaps the tamest of them all is Schnebly Hill — named after the town’s earliest pioneers and future namesake: Carl Schnebly and his wife, Sedona.

We Be Jeepin’…

We were definintely not alone out there!… There were literally dozens of other Jeepers enjoying the Broken Arrow Trail. Nena said that many of them were hoping to take advantage of a rare rain-shower on the rocks — 4-wheeling takes on a whole new feel when those rocks are wet! She also said that they so rarely get rain in Sedona that they are in awe of most mud puddles and sights of trickling water running down the Red Rock. (How privileged are we to have seen both on this one trip?!) In fact, they say that the sun shines over 300 days a year in Sedona. (That’s more than Florida!) How is it that the one time we venture to the desert, it rains most of the time that we’re there?! We lucked out though — the skies always cleared when we were participating in outdoor activities.

Making Sedona Red Rock T-shirts

We also passed these offroaders who were part of the local Nissan Xterra off-road club. They had pulled off near a small puddle on the Broken Arrow Trail where people were turning their “ho-hum, everyday white T-shirts” into “one-of-a-kind Sedona Red Rock T-shirts” — a prized possession that tourists pay big bucks for in the souvenir shops. Notice the guy with the white plastic bag? He probably purchased a white t-shirt just to bring it here and turn it Sedona Red! (NOTE: Nena says the dirt is so iron-rich that it permanently stains the material a reddish-orange, and you don’t have to worry about it washing out.)

All-Terrain Vehicles Only

We encountered various sorts of terrain along the way. This may not be the best example, but there were a few spots along the trail that required some fairly tricky maneuvering. Like the highlight of the trip for us — known as “the Devil’s staircase” — which is a somewhat steep and narrow pass between rocks on your right… and on your left… and down the middle. What really makes it a “staircase” is the fact that you have to inch your Jeep down a long stretch of rock ledges — the entire length of the hill. Way cool!

Nena Was The Perfect Tour Guide

As she states in an article she wrote for us: “Most ‘career’ guides are very serious nature and history lovers.” Indeed, she was. I only wish I’d had our mini-tape recorder on hand to record half the cool things she told us! We learned a lot about the area that we never would have known otherwise. She also explained the differences between the many Jeep tour companies you see out here — from Pink Jeep Tours to A Day In The West, and dozens more. They each offer a different kind of off-road adventure for all experience levels. On the other hand, if you want to experience Sedona off-road on your own, then consider renting a Jeep from Farabee’s Jeep Rentals! (now Barlow Jeep Rentals)

Rock On!!!

A sunshiney yellow Jeep on top of some of the biggest rocks we saw… from a distance. The Broken Arrow “trail” consisted of pure mountain slickrock… as in “red rock” limestone formations. Our 2-hour drive consisted of more rock-climbing than trail riding — from what we are used to anyway — here in Tennessee. Add to that the narrow passes and steep drop-offs, and we had ourselves one fun little adventure trip! AND… did I mention it was misty and raining part of the time? How those 4 little tires on our Jeep kept us upright, I’ll never understand. I’m serious, it’s a feeling that you have to experience yourself.

The Jeeps Look Like Ants From Afar

There are actually 3 Jeeps on the rocks in the distance… A yellow one to the left, a yellow one to the right, and a Pink Jeep partially hidden by the trees in the center.

On The Rocks

Nena snapped our picture amidst the beautiful Sedona Red Rocks.

Seeing The Sights

Nena is pointing out some of the “named” rock formations. She told us lots of funny stories about how various rocks got their names. I wish I could remember them all.

Sittin’ Back And Soakin’ It All In…

I was taking it all in from the backseat — with camera in hand. Here Jim stepped out of the Jeep to snap my photo real quick.

We Finally Spotted Some Cacti!

On our mission to find the ever-so-tall, prickly, forked cactus… we were delighted to spot fields and fields of them! We saw the most along the road between Sedona and Phoenix.

Buy a Jeep Wrangler was on my bucket list ever since I could drive. Now that we've owned 3, it's time to add fun places and things to do in a Jeep to that bucket list. Here's what's on my Jeep bucket list. What's on yours?

A friend of ours took this pic on a recent roadtrip:

It got me thinking about all the Jeep stuff that’s currently on my own bucket list.

“Buy a Jeep Wrangler” was on my list pretty much ever since I could drive, as evidenced by this scrapbook page I made after college:

Now that that one’s been accomplished (3 times over… we’re on our 3rd Jeep now!), it’s time to get busy on all those fun things we’ve been meaning to do in our Jeep and all the fun places we’ve been meaning to go.

Read more: What Fun Jeep Things Are On Your Bucket List?…

Here are a bunch of random tips that provide a number of options when it comes to caring for and cleaning your Jeep's soft top, windows, and zippers.

The truth is… if you don’t want to buy a special product to clean your Jeep soft top and vinyl windows, then your safest option is to simply use a mild dishwashing detergent and warm water. Regular ‘ol soap and water will keep dirt from building up in your Jeep’s zippers as well.

That said, your best option is to actually buy a specialty product that was designed specifically to clean and protect your soft top and vinyl or plastic windows.

Personally, from the day that we’ve owned our 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (which was only owned for a few months by someone else), we have used products that are specifically designed for the cleaning and protection of Jeep soft tops and windows. As a result, our soft top is still in excellent condition.

Following are a bunch of random tips that I’ve saved through the years. They provide a number of other options when it comes to caring for and cleaning your Jeep’s soft top, windows, and zippers…

Are images of 4×4 trail riders who tear up the landscape by driving wildly fact or fiction ? Or, is all fiction based partly on fact?

Sure, there still exist some offroaders who are irresponsible (just as there are some irresponsible backpackers). However, the fact remains that most Jeep owners tend to use their 4×4 vehicles as a means to access, explore and appreciate the wonderful, remote, natural areas of the back country. And most are riding on the roads designated specifically for off-road use.

This shift in attitude of today’s 4×4 drivers has had a tremendous impact on the public’s image of four-wheelers. This is due, in large part, to the many four-wheel drive clubs and organizations working together to educate their members… and the public.

I haven’t tried the Jeep Thrills Wii yet myself, but we’re thinking of getting a Wii and the Jeeper in me makes me want to try it.

It’s just for fun anyway, right? Plus, my nephew would love it when he comes to visit. We converted him into a Jeeper at a young age. Now he always asks when he can ride in the back of Uncle Jim’s Jeep and asks his dad when they’re going to get a Jeep. (hee hee… it worked!)

Anyways… would love to hear from fellow Jeepers if this is a decent pick for the Wii or not. Thanks in advance.
