For starters, it will help if you know what the differences are between the various types of drive systems, particularly Jeep four-wheel drive systems.

This is especially true since there is a lot of confusion surrounding the terms 4WD, 2WD, Part-Time 4WD, Full-Time 4WD, Automatic 4WD, All-Wheel Drive, and what it means to shift on the fly.

Following are detailed explanations of these types of drive systems and how they work...

How Four-Wheel Drive Works

Many people think that 4x4 means all 4 wheels are driven at the same time. But this isn't necessarily the case.

When your vehicle negotiates a bend in the road, the differential in the axle compensates for the fact that the outside wheel travels farther than the inside wheel does. Therefore, it allows a speed differential to exist between the 2 wheels.

Since energy always takes the easiest route, the differential abides by the laws of physics in this case.

So, if one of your wheels is on a slippery surface (like ice) then all of the energy will be sent to that wheel and away from the wheel that currently has good traction. However, as a result, you will lose all forward motion!

When 4WD mode is engaged on your Jeep, the front and rear axles are locked together, so at least one wheel on each axle can be driven by the engine effectively.

You can force a 4x2 vehicle to act similar to a 4x4 by gently pressing the brake pedal. This slows down the wheel that's spinning and transfers energy to the wheel that has traction.

Read: Is it time you got a four-wheel drive Jeep?

Types Of Drive Systems

Your Jeep will have one of these configurations. You should know which type of Jeep 4x4 systems yours has. There are pros and cons to each.

The following information will also be helpful if you're trying to understand how four-wheel drive works, or how other vehicles differ from yours based on their drive systems:

4x4 (4WD) - The first figure is the number of wheels. The second figure is the number of "powered" wheels. 4WD is commonly used to describe a vehicle with four-wheel drive.

Jeep's official 4x4 glossary of terms.

4x2 (2WD) - As with 4x4, the first figure is the number of wheels. The second is the number of "powered" wheels. However, with 4x2, engine power is transmitted to only 2 wheels -- usually the rear wheels. 2WD is commonly used to describe a vehicle with two-wheel drive.

Owning A 4x2 Jeep - An Oxymoron?

Part-Time 4WD (PT 4WD) - This refers to a four-wheel drive system that operates on-demand and drives all 4 wheels by locking the front and rear axles together via a shift lever. It usually includes 2 speed ranges (Hi and Lo). Part-time 4WD systems must be operated in 2WD mode on dry pavement, because they're designed to be used only in special situations when extra traction is required.

How To Use Part-Time 4WD

Full-Time 4WD (FT 4WD) - This is a four-wheel-drive system that can be operated continuously on all surfaces. It powers all 4 wheels at all times. A full-time 4WD system may include the option of part-time operation (allowing you to shift into 2WD on dry pavement, for example) and may or may not have Hi and Lo speed ranges.

Full-Time 4WD vs Part-Time 4WD

Automatic Four-Wheel Drive (Auto 4WD) - A drive system that automatically engages 4WD as needed. When internal monitors sense differences in individual wheel speeds (indicating that a tire is slipping), then 4WD is automatically engaged.

The Difference Between AWD and Automatic AWD

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) - A full-time single-speed system designed to supply drive power to all 4 wheels consistently. The percentage of front/rear power delivery varies from system to system.

How To Choose An AWD Vehicle vs A 4WD Vehicle

Shift on the Fly - A drive system that allows manual shifting from 2WD to 4WD Hi without coming to a stop. Most drive systems have a recommended speed limit at which you can engage the system. Typically, it's below 60 mph.

Check out Jeep's official 4x4 basic FAQs

        Jeep's History

The handy-dandy go anywhere 4x4 vehicle known as the Jeep has been around since World War II.

First produced by both, Willys-Overland and to meet the huge demand of war time, the Ford Motor Company, the trusted Jeep brand name has changed hands a few times throughout its 75+ year history:

Willys was bought out by Kaiser.

AMC bought the Jeep brand from Kaiser.

Renault became part owner with AMC.

AMC was bought out by Chrysler.

And finally, Daimler-Benz became financially tied to Chrysler.

Recent Changes

Finding out what's on the horizon for the Jeep name now is like looking for a needle in the haystack.

Will the Jeep be discontinued? As distasteful as this would be... with the bankruptcy court system in control at this point, it is a definite possibility. Liquidation to satisfy creditors is something the courts may insist upon.

Of course, liquidation doesn't always mean that factories are disassembled and production machinery is sold off piece by piece. Instead, the whole Jeep line may be sold off as a package. This could be part of what is being called "The New Chrysler Corporation" which will be influenced by their new partner Fiat.

This by no means is a guarantee that the Jeep line will gain a slot in the new company, or which particular models will find a new home still under a Chrysler moniker.

However, there will likely always be a market for the mainstay of the Jeep name, the Jeep Wrangler. To that end, like the Delorean, it would be very likely that some smaller company would pick up the rights to manufacture the Jeep, and production would continue -- though probably on a much smaller scale.

Jeep's Future

Loyal Jeep Wrangler owners have little to fear as the aftermarket currently provides everything you need to build your own Jeep Wrangler (or Jeep CJ) to what ever specifications you desire completely from scratch. Fiberglass body kits have made the Jeep CJ practically immortal, as well as bullet-proof!

There is one speculative possibility that has made it to print regarding the future of Jeep. It has been suggested that some of Chrysler's assets may be picked up by both GM and Ford. Ford, being the only one of the big 3 having not accepted any government bailout money, seems to be the most likely candidate.

What Goes Around Comes Around

Like so many things in history, what goes around comes around.

Wouldn't it be interesting if the Jeep name returns to its roots and once again is produced under the name brand that was part of its original place in history? It would be even more significant if it returned to a form closer to the original -- a basic utility 4x4 designed more for off-road use in a compact and efficient package.

In this video, President Obama explains what's to come from Chrysler's bankruptcy:

The New Chrysler Corporation proudly proclaims their intent to continue with the Jeep line. Time will tell, as this newly restructured company comes on line. Hopefully, the proud Jeep will continue on, much to the delight of loyal Jeep owners and Jeep enthusiasts everywhere.

They say, once you go on a Jeep Jamboree, you'll never look at nature the same way.

It's a great opportunity to be in a controlled environment where expert trail guides are available to show you exactly what your Jeep is capable of.

Jeep Jamborees are designed to match every skill level. You will find a good mix of first-timers as well as veterans attending Jeep Jamboree events, so don't think you'll feel out of place if you've never been to a Jeep Jamboree before.

Jamborees are strictly for Jeep vehicles (any Jeep model in good condition); there are no exceptions. All vehicles are subject to inspection prior to trail departure.

Jeep Jamborees take place rain or shine, and don't think that a little (or a lot!) of snow would postpone an event ...We’re talking about Jeep vehicles here!

Included in your Jeep Jamboree registration fee (typically around $250 per person; prices vary by location) are: meals, all the necessary permits for off-roading, experienced guides, and more. It's worth noting that several of the Jeep Jamboree trails are only accessible through this program.

No partial trips are offered, so even if you cannot attend one or more of the days' events, you must pay the entire registration fee.

No spectators are allowed. All participants must be officially registered and pay the registration fee. There are discounts for parties of 4 or more. Seat belts are required for each person in the Jeep.

Every Jamboree trail is rated from 1 (easiest) to 10 (most difficult). In general, the higher the trail rating, the greater your likelihood of encountering vehicular damage.

These off-road treks have a long tradition dating back to 1953 when 4x4 pioneer Mark A. In 1954, Willys Motors -- then manufacturer of Jeep vehicles -- became involved with the adventure, and Jeep Jamborees have been an off-road tradition ever since. -- Jeep Jamboree USA

Still, we waited until the last minute to reserve our Jeep.

As a result, we got what must have been THE last Jeep left to be rented on the island that day!

The lesson: don't wait til the day before to rent your Jeep. Book it a couple days early. Make your reservations through the concierge at your hotel or phone the major Jeep rental companies (like Hertz, Budget, etc) directly.

Jeep rentals in Aruba are reasonable: $50 to $60 for the full day (non-4WD vehicles are much cheaper for the day).

Read: The pros & cons of a Jeep rental vs a Taxi ride in Aruba.

The island is only 19 miles long and 6 miles wide, so as long as you start early in the morning, you're likely to get all of the major sights in. It's a great way to spend a day in Aruba!

Here's what our fun-filled day of Jeeping was like in Aruba...

Our Rented Jeep

Since our day of Jeeping was planned at the last-minute, we were disappointed to learn that all Jeeps were sold out on the morning we wanted to drive around and explore the island of Aruba.

Our only option was to ask the front desk clerk (they were always so willing to help at the RUI Palace, nice people).

Unfortunately, the one they found "sounded" fine, but when we saw it in person, we could hardly believe our eyes.

Ours was bottom of the barrel I tell ya... The interior had all been stripped out and shoddily replaced. Thank goodness we didn't want to use the soft top, because it was wopper-jawed and the soft top frame looked bent.

We're not picky about Jeeps, trust me. We've been in our share of beat up Jeeps and had a grand 'ol time. In this case, it wasn't the "look" of the Jeep... it was the fact that this Jeep Wrangler 4WD sounded like it was on its last legs. On every little bump, it felt like the bottom was going to fall out from under us. And it didn't shift gears very well either.

But the worst part: the tires! Three of the 4 tires had yellow marker circles pin-pointing where holes had been fixed before. A few of these were in the sidewalls!

We were told by the owner of the Jeep rental place not to venture offroad. (Ha! it's a 4WD Jeep, are you kidding me? We're goin' offroad, we thought.)

Well, after a couple miles of moseying down the paved road, we decided we'd play it more cautious than normal and try not to go offroad if we didn't have to.

TIP: If you're renting a vehicle, be sure to familiarize yourself with the local traffic signs. We were clueless about what the signs meant. But, for the most part, speed limits are not obeyed. We saw some rather crazy passing strategies on our trip!

Flat Tires Are Common

Here's a tip before you rent a Jeep in Aruba: Know how to change a tire!

In Aruba, you never know what you're going to get, Jeepwise. We saw a number of other tourists in rented Jeeps as well. And the Jeeps ran the gamut from "nice and clean" Jeeps to beat up ones like ours.

Unfortunately, ours got a flat tire halfway into the day. Yes, the yellow markings on the tires' sidewalls should've been a clue. But Jim and Terry ended up wasting a good deal of time trying to make the beat up old lug wrench work properly since it was "stripped" from having been used so much!

And we're obviously not the only ones who got a flat tire out there in the Caribbean desert... there were tire remains spotted on the beaches and on the sides of the roads.

Wildlife Galore

One of the highlights of our Caribbean Desert adventure was driving past so many free-roaming wildlife.

There were sheep of all colors, shapes, sizes, and types. Plus lizards or iquanas -- from small to large and brightly colored.

And then there were these 2 donkeys. They came right up to our Jeep. They were really mellow.

But I have to admit, about the moment one got close enough to the Jeep for Terry to start petting him, images of "wildlife adventures gone bad" suddenly flashed through my mind.

Aruba's Natural Rock Formations

Another highlight on our Jeep ride: all of the cool rock formations!

From the "natural bridges" created by waves beating on rocks to all these manmade rock statues. They were incredibly similar to the Inukshuk stone shapes that we saw in Canada. But in Aruba, these miniature stone statues are everywhere you look near the Bushiribana Ruïnes and The Natural Bridge. Word is, you're supposed to make your own little rock formation there, and if it's still standing naturally on its own when you return, then you're destined to have good luck.

Ages ago, most of Aruba was submerged under water. Eventually, "natural bridges" were carved out of rock and coral by the continuous pounding of the sea. Today, there are 7 natural bridge-like structures in Aruba. The most popular, The Natural Bridge was the longest in the Caribbean (100-feet long and 24-feet high) until it collapsed in 2005. When you see it in person, it's still a remarkable site.

<img width="395" height="263" align="" title="One of the many ATV tour groups we passed while Jeeping around Aruba. In fact, it's the rocky coral that most likely busted the tire on our Jeep.

You see, we ventured offroad a bit to this one spot along the beach (that was a million miles long) and there was no way you could even think about walking barefoot along these parts. The "beach" was harded coral that had formed along the beachside through the years. It had sharp pointy parts from all angles -- similar to coral or sponge that you might find in the ocean. That is probably what pierced the sidewall of our tire!

Caves And Flashlights And Bats, Oh My!

We also visited some of the caves found on the island of Aruba.

There are Indian rock drawings found on the cave walls inside, and tour guides with flashlights help to light your way and explain some of the cave's natural formations.

Bats live up high in the cave's crevices. Many of the caves were closed to the public when we were there because vandals had written grafitti on some of the cave walls.

<img width="195" height="130" align="" src="http://jeeps.thefuntimesguide.com/images/blogs/aruba-guide-using-flashlight-in-cave-thumb-195x130-6823.jpg" alt="aruba-guide-using-flashlight-in-cave.jpg" title="One of the Aruba cave guides using low-powered flashlights to show tourists the bats. The babies left behind had starved and died. So, in order to help restore the bats' natural habitat, they temporarily closed off several caves until things got back to normal.

You don't want to take a vehicle out on the trails only to get stuck and run into serious problems.

To determine whether your 4x4 vehicle is trail-ready and capable of surviving a trip off-road, at the very least, you should do a visual inspection -- inside and out.

If anything seems awry (or if you've got some extra time and you just want to make sure your vehicle is in the best condition it can be for offroading), then you may want to do a more thorough check of each of the main parts of your 4x4 vehicle.

Once your vehicle is checked and ready to roll, it's time to load the necessary gear and equipment on board…

Necessities To Keep On-Board Your Vehicle

Make sure that you've covered all your bases -- from your basic necessities to advanced recovery gear.

A few things to think about:

tools to keep on-board

safety and survival gear

spare parts to take with you

first aid supplies

optional items just for fun & convenience

Tips For Packing Everything Inside The Vehicle

Some thought should be given as to how you will pack each of the above items in -- or on -- your vehicle, because overloading your vehicle can be just as dangerous as not taking along the right gear in the first place.

The extra weight can cause poor balance and unnecessary stress on your vehicle and its components, so try to pack accordingly, being careful not to overload the vehicle. You've heard about SUV rollovers?... They happen off road too!

So, how much should you pack?... Ultimately, the tools, equipment, and spare parts you take along will depend on where you are going and for how long. Your goal is to be adequately prepared for the remoteness of the area you'll be traveling in.

As a rule, you should pack enough to be confident that you could get yourself out of a jam. But, if you run into a sticky situation and you're unable to do the repair yourself, then as long as you've packed appropriately using the checklists above, then you'll be safe and comfortable while you wait for help. (Please remember to always stay with your vehicle in the event of a breakdown.)

Take a few minutes ahead of time to avoid flying projectiles inside your vehicle! It is extremely important to keep all of the items you've loaded in your vehicle securely strapped down or safely stowed away -- because loose items could become projectiles while offroading and hit you or your passengers.

When offroading, you should use heavy-duty straps (not bungee cords) to secure items in your vehicle. Put smaller items in larger containers or bags, then strap down anything that will hurt if it hits you.

Summary

These checklists should get you started when it comes to packing for your next off road trip. Your goal is to be adequately prepared for the remoteness of the area you'll be traveling in.

Last, but not least, don't forget your driver's license, proof of insurance, money, and to let someone know where you're going. Now, all that's left to do is fill up your tank and hit the road.

And remember… Tread Lightly!

RELATED:

Camping Checklist For 4-Wheelers - Helpful first-hand advice regarding clothing, food, fires, backpacks, Sleeping bags, stoves, lights, toilets, water purification, and more.
Make sure that you have extras on hand for each of the following parts to fit your 4WD vehicle.

Keep in mind that many of your old parts can be used as spares in an emergency, so start saving them now.

Remember, you don’t need to bring every spare part you own on the trail; just bring the parts that are most likely to break or give out on the spot:

Air filter

Belts

Brake line

Fuel filter

Fuses

Hoses (and several sizes of hose clamps)

Oil (and an oil filter)

Spark plugs

Tire valve stems with cores

Tires (don't forget a good full-size spare!)

U-joints

Vacuum line (a small piece)

Wiper blades

Your aim is to think of all the components that would leave you stranded if they failed. Those are the ones to take along spares for.

A good rule of thumb is to take along anything that has already broken twice, because the odds are, it could happen again.

Closely inspect the inner workings of your vehicle and make sure that the following parts are in good working condition and you don't hear any strange noises coming from these areas:

Axles & Differentials - hubs, seals, vacuum lines, shift motors, vent lines, front u-joints

Battery - clean terminals, check for damaged or corroded wiring

Brakes - drums, rotors, pads/shoes, fluid, hoses, leaks, check your emergency brake, brake lights

Belts & Hoses - look for cracks or bulges

Body & Frame - look for cracks

Cooling/Heating System - look for leaks, fluid levels, clean and repair fins, check hoses, thermostat, radiator cap

Driveline/Transmission - inspect case and shifter, leaks, fluids, universal & cv joints, skid plates

Engine - carburetor, fuel injectors, spark plugs, wires, pcv valve, pumps, spark plugs, distributor & wires, belts; check for leaks and cracks

Exhaust - muffler, tailpipe

Fluids - oil, transmission, brake, radiator coolant, gear oils, wipers, power steering

Lights - headlights, brake lights, auxiliary lights; make sure they're aimed properly

Nuts & Bolts - tighten axle u-bolts, lug bolts, nuts

Steering - check alignment, fluid level, belts and hoses, pump and reservoir for leaks

Suspension - springs, shocks, alignment, wheel bearings, steering linkage

Tires - tighten lug nuts, air pressure, tread wear (including your full-size spare), look for cuts and missing chunks

Wipers - check for wear, washer fluid level

Lastly, make sure you know the vehicle requirements for the places where you'll be driving.

For example, years ago we took our stock Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to Tellico -- only to get stuck. You really need to have some lift on your vehicle in order to ride there.
